Get To Know Reggie Becton

Pop N Rhythm: Growing up, was music or anything artistic part of your life during your childhood? Anything that showed glimpses of you becoming a RnB artist?

Reggie Becton: The first glimpse of stardom I felt was in pre-k. During my pre-k graduation ceremony, I was “that kid.” I had like three musical solos in the program, knew every dance move, and even gave a speech. That is one of my fondest memories of performing and something that always stuck with me. idk why I remember that day so vividly, but I think it’s because from a very young age I knew I wanted to sing and perform.

Pop N Rhythm: Being originally from the DMV area, any local music that you were fan of or influenced you?

Reggie Becton: Go-Go, the music of DC impacted my sound greatly. Go-go introduced me to so many genres of music and made me feel comfortable in listening to things others may deem outside the box or niche. When I approach creating music today I am always thinking about how I can infuse different sounds and sonics. My album, California is like Go-Go in a way. Instead of just being one sonic or one mood it’s more of an assortment of different grooves and pockets that all mesh really well together.

Pop N Rhythm: At 17 you began your career, what led you to make the decision to want to make music as a profession at such a young age when it’s not the easiest thing to do?

Reggie Becton: At 17, I released my first song ever to the world. When I say world I really just mean my high school. I remember after I released it I was so afraid that people would hate it and tease me about it. I was so wrong! No one said it was amazing but no one said it was bad. That’s when I realized “we are our own worst critics”. learning that made me really hone in on self-love and self-discovery which is how I think I was able to build a vision at such a young age for what I am living today.

Pop N Rhythm: What initially gave you the motivation to take the trip and the chance of moving to California from the east coast?

Reggie Becton: I had just graduated college and knew I wanted more. I felt like I was at crossroads and had to make a decision to go corporate or creative. I think the biggest hurdle in making the decision to move was the doubt. I was so fearful of it not panning out, not having a solid plan, etc that I almost talked myself out of moving. After a conversation with 2 close friends, Damon and Ari, and them repeatedly asking, “What do you have to lose?”… What do you have to lose?” I realized the only thing I would waste if anything was time and although you can’t get it back you also can’t create more.

Pop N Rhythm: Since you arrived, you’ve released multiple EPs, what has inspired and motivated your drive since your arrival?

Reggie Becton: This may sound a bit crazy, but a big driving force in staying motivated, aside from me knowing that music is my Purpose, is me going to a family reunion or BBQ 5 years from now and everyone jokingly talking about my failed music career. That is something that truly haunts me. Additionally, all the sacrifices I made up until now would all be in vain. Finally, my dream is embedded in others’ dreams now so it would be very selfish of me to just one day say “I quit.” That would impact the lives of the producers I work with, my management team, band, etc.

Pop N Rhythm: If you could pick one song to showcase you the most as an artist what would it be? Why?

Reggie Becton: Today in this current moment, I would select “LOSERS” off my upcoming album. It has all the making of Reggie Becton. Great songwriting, suede vocal tone, storytelling, electric guitar, and it’s just very vulnerable.

Pop N Rhythm: With a long list of R&B artists, how do you feel you can emerge from amongst the crowd?

Reggie Becton: If I truly knew the answer to this question, I would have emerged by now, lol. I don’t know really, stay grateful, stay connected to the source.

Pop N Rhythm: Your upcoming project California what’s the concept behind it? What can listeners expect?

Reggie Becton: My album, California is an exploration of me finding myself through my dealings in love, loneliness, loss, and life while living in California. The album is not meant to be this big statement on what California is as a place/state. It is moreso me, illustrating the “California ” I inhibited 5 years ago when moving here and how it has shaped my whole being. Every person’s “California” is different. California for me was where I found solitude in discomfort, which was vital to my growth as a man and artist.

From moving to L.A. in 2016 with nothing but an air mattress, $1,000, and “hella” emotional baggage to now being able to email music editors ,and freely talk about the cover of my debut album is full circle and a testament of that growth. California, simply put, is about self-discovery in all facets of life and persevering through your personal struggles and demons.

Constantly I am asked, “do you think you needed to move to California to be successful in music?” My response always stays the same: “I didn’t need California to become successful in music, I needed California to become the person I am today which has made me successful in music.”

Pop N Rhythm: Anything else you would like the people to know? Anything to be on the lookout for?

Reggie Becton: I love R&B. I love Chick-Fil-A. Lastly, but most importantly, I am on tour with Grace Weber this fall across the US. Tickets are on sale now and I am dying to perform and meet fans from all over.
